How Do I Dispose Of
General household trash should be placed in your trash cart for weekly pickup at curbside. Below are specific items that need to disposed of a different manner.
Proper Disposal Of Specific Items
Alkaline (Household) Batteries | Drop-off locations at the Transfer Station and the DPW building. |
Appliances Containing Freon (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers) | Call to schedule a pickup. There is an extra $25 charge to remove the freon and to have it inspected. Also accepted at the Transfer Station. |
Appliances - Large | Call to schedule a pickup, fees apply. |
Appliances - Small | Can be thrown in your trash cart with general trash. |
Branches, Bushes, Paper Bags of Yard Waste | Call to schedule a Thursday pick-up ($35 a truckload) or take to the Transfer Station for no charge. |
Bricks, Concrete, Dirt, Loose Leaves, Sod | Call to schedule a Thursday loader stop pick-up. The fee is $50/cubic yard. |
Cell Phones | These can be dropped off at Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy. |
Computers and Accessories | Accepted at the Riverview Land Preserve for recycling(734-281-4263). Or take to a Wayne County Hazardous Waste Collection event (link to right). |
Fax Machines, Copiers, Televisions | Best Buy stores will recycle, otherwise just throw away. |
Fluorescent Bulbs | Take to a Wayne County Hazardous Waste Collection event (link to right). |
Gasoline | Take to a Wayne County Hazardous Waste Collection event (link to right). |
Household Cleaners/Chemicals | Take to a Wayne County Hazardous Waste Collection event (link to right). |
Household items too large for my trash cart (furniture, shelving, garage items) | Call to schedule a pick-up. |
Ink Cartridges | These can be dropped off at Target or Best Buy. |
Medical Waste (Syringes/Needles) | Drop off at Fire Station 2 located on King Rd. |
Mercury Thermometers/Thermostats | Take to a Wayne County Hazardous Waste Collection event (link to right). |
Motor Oil | Take to Transfer Station, no charge. |
Paint | If paint is dried up, it may be placed in trash cart. If not already dry, fill can with kitty litter to harden the paint. Otherwise take to a Wayne County Hazardous Waste Collection event (link to right). |
Plastic Grocery Bags | Most grocery stores, Target, Lowes |
Prescription Drugs | Drop off at the Police Station. No liquids or needles. |
Shingles | The City rents 4-yard dumpsters for shingles. The fee is $140 per dump. Shingles are NOT accepted at the Transfer Station. They are accepted at the Riverview Land Preserve. Call 734-281-4263 for information. |
Tires | They are accepted at Silver Lining Recycling in Wyandotte for a small fee. Call 734-324-4800 for details. |
